In site health we’re currently seeing the message below under “email domain issues detected”

We’re currently using a custom smtp server, so i’m wondering why is this message appearing and is it anything to be concerned about?

Emails are sending OK however the message has only started appearing recently.

    Current from email domain: redacted.net
    Domain Check Results

cURL error 35: OpenSSL SSL_connect: SSL_ERROR_SYSCALL in connection to connect.wpmailsmtp.com:443

When we send a test email, the email send ok but again we get the message below:

cURL error 35: OpenSSL SSL_connect: SSL_ERROR_SYSCALL in connection to connect.wpmailsmtp.com:443

    Hi @help23

Thanks for reaching out and we apologise for the delayed response.

The error indicates an SSL connection error. The error can be due to an outdated cURL package, connection errors, or else a version mismatch between the PHP cURL and SSL protocol of the end server.

Please contact your hosting provider with the error you’re receiving and they should be able to fix the issue for you.

Hi @dakeg – Thanks for the response.

We’re using our own smtp sever, so my query is really – why is the site trying to contact – connect.wpmailsmtp.com ?

    Hi @help23

The reason your website is attempting to access connect.wpsmtp.com is that our domain checker is hosted there. For one or more of these reasons, your server can’t access our domain checker host.

As you mentioned, this isn’t a big issue because you can send emails via your SMTP server, and it appears that email delivery is not affected.

Be that as it may, I would recommend fixing the cURL issue, since it can affect some other functionality on your website.
