Jetpack gives you this ability.http://jetpack.me/features/
Thank you for this information. That’s great but Jetpack has many features I (and many others) simply do not need also I do not want to have to associate my standalone site with a wordpress.com account. Such a simple feature really should be part of the core product.
Perhaps it is not simply to encourage people to install jetpack though. I hope that is not the case.

Have you posted a support topic for the wp-email-login plugin? https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/wp-email-login#postform
It might be better to address the problem there.
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have posted but unfortunately the author has yet to reply:

completely agree !!!!
no one uses usernames anymore !!!!
I’m so surprised there is not a plugin to deal with this matter and auto generate a username as unique identifier on registration
This feature will be in WordPress 4.5 which will be released in April and can be tested in the latest beta version of 4.5 https://wordpress.org/wordpress-4.5-beta2.zip
edit: I anticipate that once v4.5 is released, some people will be worried/upset/furious that users will be able to log in using their registered email address in place of the username. For these people I have created a plugin to prevent this: https://wordpress.org/plugins/no-login-by-email-address/
That is fantastic news! 🙂
