I am not very savvy with web programming, however, I really would like to learn how to eliminate all of the un-necessary boxes & links on the side bars of a majority of these themes I have found. (for example, all of the META section)

    Any ideas?

open up sidebar.php in your text editor (NOT a wysiwyg like frontpage) and find what you don’t want, remove it, and re-upload the file.

other than themes like K2 with a crazy amount of php conditionals in the sidebar, it’s usually pretty easy to open it up and find what you don’t want and delete it

You can also use a Widgetized theme and then Meta and other sidebar content are just drag and drop.
