Editor won't let me edit!!!

    I recently built a website for a company. Everything has been working great for 2 months, no complaints. They got in touch with me yesterday in regards to the banner at the top not showing properly in Internet Explorer. One site said to insert the code <!DOCTYPE html> into the templates in the editor. I inserted the code into several templates. The banner is now visible in its entirety, but the navigation bar is horrible. I went back to the editor to delete the code and start over. Now the editor won’t let me update the code of any template. Whenever I try to delete the code, I click Update File and is says “successfully updated”, but then I click back to the template and the code is still there. Sometimes when I click Update File after deleting the code, it gives me the error message: Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by..etc… PLEASE HELP ME DELETE THIS CODE!
