That feature relies on javascript working (among other things). Have you tried the following?
1. Deactivate all of your plugins, no exception
2. Switch to the Twenty Fourteen theme
3. Clear your browser’s cache and cookies
4. Re-login and attempt to embed a YouTube link in the editor?
If there is any conflict in your setup then those steps may help you identify them. Also consider giving this whole topic a read.

It contains many pointers that may help you resolve your problem with the Visual Editor.
I does not work in either IE 11 or FireFox.
I appreciate you responding. However, switching to another theme is not an option. I am using PureVision and must stay with this theme.
I guess the new features of WordPress 4.0 are VERY conditional. I doubt that most users will be able to meet the conditions. Why make it so hard?

I’m sorry, but there is no magic bullet for troubleshooting these issues.
It’s not that 4.0 is very conditional and it works fine for most people. I was floored when my embedded content just showed up in the Visual Editor live like that. It’s one of my favorite 4.0 features.
That doesn’t mean it’s not working for you (it’s not quite) but without you performing basic troubleshooting then no one else will be able to assist you with your problem.
