• Hi,

I am having troubles understanding exactly how i can edit the Underscores theme from my text editor, and have the updates show on my WordPress.org website once I save and refresh the page. My problem is that I had to install the theme via a zip file, so how would I be able to edit the content within that file without moving the folder to an unzipped state?

I would like to build on top of Underscores, and see my progression as I go.
I am new to wordpress and this is very confusing. I linked to a video with someone doing what I am trying to do (at around the 5 minute mark), but I’m not sure how he does it. In the next video in his series, he is basically seeing updates on his wp site in real time.

If someone could help me with this issue or point me in the direction of some helpful information, I would greatly appreciate it!

  • You will need to make changes locally using your text editor, and then upload the edited file via FTP to your WordPress directory.

That is what he is copying across.

He is using WordPress locally though, so if you are developing on a domain rather than locally, the FTP route is where you will need to go.

Yes i’m using a domain. So there isn’t a way for me to actually see my edits as I develop the styles for the theme unless I develop locally. Is there an easy way to set that up or will I basically have to go through the whole wordpress install process the same way as before with a different site?

    Thanks for your reply.

You could just FTP into the root directory, download the relevant files you want to edit, edit them locally and then reupload to the server, refreshing your page as you go.

That is really the only way to do it on a live domain.

Unless I am misunderstanding what you mean exactly.
