  • You’ll need to change their file permissions. This article should be helpful: Changing_File_Permissions

Side note: Be sure to save a copy of what you want to change before you change it! You’ll thank yourself if an edit mucks up your theme 🙂

Well, I changed the index.php file’s permissions and it still is not allowing me to edit my files.

You’d do better to change the permissions on the theme files — those are what you want to edit! You’ll find them under wp-content/themes/YourThemeName

I went into my theme’s files and set them all to read and write, but I still have the message “If this file were writable you could edit it.”

    Now what?

Depending on how your server is configured, some folks have to change them to 777 (world read & write).

If you need to do that:

    1) Change them back to 644 immediately after editing

    -or –

    2) Consider using an FTP/scp client to download to your computer, edit and then upload.
