# Editing Permalink Structure

 * Hi all,
 * I will do my best to keep this short and to the point because unfortunately I’m
   not offering anything particularly constructive, just asking for help 🙁
 * I am very incompetent when it comes to most programming (with the exception of
   HTML which is child’s play) and reading some of the Permalink Structures threads
   gave me half of a headache, I tried my best to figure out what versions of what
   software are running on my server to no avail at all (I’m with GoDaddy).
 * To cut the long story short, I want to find a walkthrough that will teach me 
   how to convert my already 50-something-post website (www.FormulaWhat.com) from
   the Default permalink structure to the “Pretty Permalinks” structure, without
   damaging things. Is this a very complicated process in WordPress, and perhaps
   more importantly, if I ever wanted to reinstall WordPress OR export all my posts
   to a different medium (Greymatter, B2 etc., let’s just assume cause I think WordPress
   is the best) would it cause problems?
 * Lastly, failing any of the above, if any kind soul wants to help me out either
   via MSN or otherwise I’d more than welcome their time, and will send virtual 
   cookies and milk!

 * Indeed I have – it screws up all the current links on the website which is why
   I haven’t done it. Archives, individual post links, etc. no longer work if I 
   just switch using Options > Permalinks.
 * I also read Using Permalinks before posting my original topoic, but unfortunately
   it deals more with the different types of permalinks rather than switching from
   one to another after a WP blog has accumulated posts. I’m not that technically
   competent 🙁

 * Default Permalinks (yourblog.com/?p=3) always work, regardless of what current
   style of Permalinks are set.
 * So, the good news is, you won’t break anything.
 * However, if links stop working when you change from default at Options -> permalinks,
   then you have other issues to ponder. There’s a lot of troubleshooting tips at
   [Permalinks](http://codex.wordpress.org/Permalinks)… but I believe you mentioned
   you’re with GoDaddy? Are you on a Windows or Linux server? You’ll want to be 
   on a linux server.

 * Thanks for the tip – I will reply to this thread AFTER New Year’s celebrations
   have taken place 😉 but just to let you know, I know for certain I’m on a Linux
   server with GoDaddy, and just switching the Permalink Structure to non-default
   screws up all existing links. 🙁

 * Thank you HandySolo – once again, my failure to search for the correct terms 
   means the answer eluded me. Your link was spot on and it turns out I simply had
   to wait a little for the permalinks to start working – fabulous! 🙂
