As far as I know, you have 2 options:
1 - Run a msql query that will do the search-replace for you. Very quick, but you need to get someone to write the query
2 - Download your database, open it in a decent text-editor, do a search-replace and then replace it.
    Neither are particularly good solutions.

i figured it would have to be something like that. both sound a little dangerous. i might give #1 a try, after backing up repeatedly.

I have been impressed with using MySQL Admin for this kind of thing. You can download an entire database, edit it in Excel (or wherever) and then replace the whole table with your edited version.
You are right to do copious back-ups first, of course.
