Editing index.php messes up site

  • So I edited my index.php file manually to insert some Amazon ad’s in the navigation bar at the right. Somehow, this messed everything up. I can’t get to my archives and I can’t publish any new pages.

How can I fix this? In the future how can I manually insert ads without messing up the site?

  • Rule # One: always keep an unaltered copy of your template files (the famous “BACKUP before messing around” warning)!

What WP version that you have the sidebar in the index?
    Which theme?
Obviously you did something more than just adding an ad because even the encoding is screwed up in your posts.
My only advice: upload a fresh, untouched copy of the theme.
