Support » Fixing WordPress » Edited header.php and now white screen of death

  • So I edited my header.php and copied what I was getting rid of before I started so this wouldn’t be a problem… then I lost the backup.

I went into header.php because I was trying to remove a full screen map that showed up out of nowhere on the homepage… I removed some code that said something like

    div id=”map_contact”

and about four lines of info after that. It is on the Pluto wordpress theme and I can’t seem to fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated. I also have no access to hosting for the site so I have that going for me as well.

  • I already tried deactivating all plug-ins. The site is… it looks like the other pages work but the theme is not working. comes up but is just a page, it usually pops out of the sidebar which is what is now non-existent.

You need to deactivate your theme or replace that header.php file with a new copy. You should be able to do that via FTP or Cpanel.

I already tried getting the original header.php and it didn’t match what was up there…

Have you manually reinstalled the theme? You need to do that via FTP or Cpanel.

Just manually reinstalled the theme… Now the original problem that started this all is back. There is a full screen map on the homepage. This is what we were trying to get rid of initially.

I’d suggest asking the developer of the theme for help modifying it – and look at creating a child theme so that your changes are not lost when you update the theme.

More then likely you made a small error when you edited the header.php. I do a lot of customization to WordPress themes. I run into this issue all of the time. Usually it comes from deleting a ; adding html to a php section or vice versa.

When this happens then it’s a simple matter of using ftp to fix the error you made in the header.php. Very rarely is a full theme restoration necessary.

Sorry, meant to post this link too:
