edit permalink structure without breaking links

  • I started with the default permalink structure e.g. mydomain.com/?p=273 Now I want to edit my permalink structure to be more search engine friendly e.g. mydomain.com/archives/%post_id% However, I already have 273 posts and can’t afford to break all the links to my old posts. How can I update my permalink structure without breaking my old links? I feel that there should be a way to update the permalink structure and have it apply only to all future posts. What are my options? I’ve searched all over and haven’t found anything helpful. Thanks so much!

  • 1. The “nice” permalinks are not more SE-friendly than the default. They are just human eyes-friendly.
    2. There is no way to change the permalink structure only for the future posts, sorry.
    3. Maybe a good coder can offer some special .htaccess rules to help you to redirect from the old URIs to the new ones.
