Edit Home Page Without Loosing Navigation Bar
-
I am editing the webpage but when I try and turn on static front page, so that I can edit it, I lose the awesome site navigation bar at the top of the page. I have asked Powweb live chat, they are useless, I have checked the help and forums sections and nothing yet. Please let me know how to fix this. I want to edit my front page without losing the site nav bar across the top (note: when I turn on static front page the “navigation bar” at the top gets completely spread into individual buttons instead of having drop down menus. for example, instead of having the bar say “Home, Our Work, Contact, etc..” and when you highlight one having a dropdown menu from parent pages to supported pages, you end up having a huge list of buttons that include all pages but it looks like crap, so it will say “home, out work, construction, parks, outdoor, indoor, contact, office, home, office, fax, etc…” Please help

Link to the site? Are you using a Child Theme so that your changes won’t be lost when the theme is updated?
I am not sure what I am using, I am new to webdesign. its gerrety.com
It may be a child theme, I can switch themes. I dont care that much I just want it to look professional. I have powwebs highest membership so I am not sure what all options I have with wordpress for themes that dont have this issue. Can you please post a link to your site?
I am using Twenty Twelve
I linked that properly but it just brings you to wordpress. Just copy paste http://www.gerrety.com I guess
You don’t have a child theme – but your SHOULD use one if you are wanting to make any modifications to theme files – see:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes
So do that before you do anything else and then replace twentytwelve with a new copy.
As to the navigation – have you set up a Custom Menu?
I dont know how, basically I am given a “navigation” tool and the only thing I can do is either select or de-select “menu” with no edit options. Why should I use a child theme? So I dont accidentally delete info?
I do know how to edit what shows up on the menu to the right of my page, I want to make sure I dont lose the menu on the top of my page, that is across the top with the dropdown menus coming from each tab once you place your cursor over it. That is what is complicated
If you modify theme files your changes will be lost when WP is updated and it’s also crucial to have a clean copy of the default theme for troubleshooting purposes. So make a child theme.
As to modifications – what are you trying to change? PHP-based websites do not have static HTML pages – so (most) changes are made either via modifying CSS, changing your content or modifying .php template files.
I am trying to make sure that I can EDIT MY HOME PAGE as well as KEEP THE MENU ACROSS THE TOP OF THE SCREEN. Basically, what I am trying to do is get rid of the blog style front page (which sucks) change it to a static front page (which is an option under tools) so that I can edit it to look like whatever I want, without losing the menu across the top of the screen. When I select to have a static front page (so that I dont just have a “leave comments here” front page) I lose the menu and it goes to a spaced out crappy menu, if this is still confusing I will take screen shots of both and publish them on http://www.gerrety.com so you can see what I am saying.
Where are you making these changes? The navigation should not be disappearing if you are only changing theme options/settings.
Also, do you have comments turned off on the static home page – under Pages – click Quick Edit for that page, and see that “allow comments” is unchecked.
My home page came with my theme. I cannot delete it and create my own for some reason. It wont allow me to make my homepage like all of my other pages. I do have the option to disallow comments but the point is STILL that when I change it to or from static home page (allowing me to edit it like a normal webpage or to have it be the preset blog page) it takes away my dropdown menu option and gives me a spaced out button by button menu, basically it turns off the option for parent pages and stuff.
It seems to be working now. I did not edit a thing tho, I wonder if someone from wordpress edited my stuff? for now it seems that all is well. thanks!
