E-mail share button still opens in same window

When the “share via e-mail” button option is clicked, it results in a web-based e-mail client (e.g. Gmail) loading in the same window, instead of in a new tab or window. This is the only social share button that doesn’t open in a new window, and is undesirable behavior for the user and website.

I originally posted about this roughly a year ago, and @heateor mentioned that it would be fixed in an upcoming release–is that still a possibility? Could it happen this month?
