I’m an autodidact with zero $ making a site for a non-profit, and am struggling with getting Updraft to authenticate Dropbox.

The outward link to Dropbox that reads…
    “Remote storage authentication
You have selected a remote storage option which has an authorisation step to complete:
Follow this link to authorise access to your Dropbox account (you will not be able to backup to Dropbox without it)”
    leads here…
    “To complete setup for Dropbox…
The button will take you to: http://www.something.org/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=updraftplus&action=updraftmethod-dropbox-auth”
—But it doesn’t go there. Instead, I”m booted out of WordPress on every tab, and after logging back in again and navigating back to the Updraft settings tab there’s an error message that Dropbox isn’t authenticated.

Advice was that the failure to authenticate was caused by ‘server’s ‘maxQueryString’ request limit’ being too low and requiring min 3500. So the provider has lifted the limit to 15000, but that hasn’t fixed the problem.

It’s been tried with the Dropbox account logged in, in 4 different browsers including Firefox in safe mode, with the security plugin disabled, with cookies deleted, the cache cleared, with cookies permitted, with all permissions granted and no privacy protections in place.

Within Dropbox, in the Apps tab, Updraft is listed with all its permissions, as being connected to Dropbox…yet that link back to WordPress is always failing, and it doesn’t complete the authentication.

Why is wordpress logging out in response to the authentication link?

Getting very worried, and have been bashing around inside this problem for days without finding a solution. What have I been doing wrong/not doing?

How many others have had this difficulty?

Would really appreciate some ideas on how to proceed.

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

For testing purposes, do you get the same issue when using a different storage? Like Google Drive?

    Thanks for your response.

I tried Onedrive, which has a free version, but it costs to access it via Updraft for some reason. That wasn’t clear in the list, so I wasted time creating a new account only to find that money barrier at the end.

Unfortunately Google Drive is not an option.

Could we troubleshoot the Dropbox process?

ps. please extend the time limit for editing one’s own posts to *no limit*

That would help a lot with giving the opportunity to refine, clarify. Very reassuring. More edits were needed for original post to adjust an essential nuance. It’s disquieting having own words co-opted. Apologies for off-topic remark.

    Hi,

Please can you try to wipeout settings, re-install the plugin and then re-setup UpdrftPlus. Do you still get the same issue?

Does your server also have a firewall?

Thanks Bryle, that was the second thing I tried, after repeated attempts the usual way. Tried wiping the settings under ‘advanced’, as you mention, several times.

It didn’t until this evening when I set one up, but I disabled again it to try the Dropbox connection another time.

I’m going to have another look through the plugins for a possible conflict. Any other suggestions would be great.

    Thank you Bryle.

    The latest:

put WP in troubleshooting mode and enabled only Updraft. Underwent Authentication process and got the same bounce back to login screen.

Logged back in- but didn’t have to log in on every tab this time.

    Tried again, this time successfully.

Dropbox is now “(You appear to be already authenticated)”

BUT several attempts at backups throw errors:

    Dropbox_BadRequestException

    From the log:
Dropbox: chunked upload exception (Dropbox_BadRequestException): (line: 225, file: /home/customer/www/[thesite]/public_html/wp-content/plugins/updraftplus/includes/Dropbox2/OAuth/Consumer/Curl.php)

Settings include (attempts to make it easy for Updraft to talk to Dropbox):

CHECKED – ON: Use the server’s SSL certificates.:

CHECKED – ON: Do not verify SSL certificates.:

    Those settings didn’t help.

Here’s a user’s similar experience that spontaneously resolved:
    https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-API-Support-Feedback/Dropbox-authentication-error-with-UpdraftPlus-from-Wordpress/td-p/420124

Support staff pointed the user back at Updraft.

    Do you have any ideas?

    (@wpusrr)

Here is a possible problem: The account holder’s name as listed in Updraft is wrong. That username had to be changed. Could that be the something to do with the problem, and if so, is there a way to update Updraft on this?

Note that there is only one admin user, so it’s not possible to log out and log in again as the user Updraft thinks is the one.

    Hi,

I have asked one of my colleagues and asks what version of Curl is installed on your server? This can be found in the UpdraftPlus Advanced Tools->Site information page. He suspects that your host is using an old or broken version of Curl. Please can you check with your host/server admin?

We did some tests on our and we can’t replicate the issue.

    Curl version:
    7.66.0 / SSL: OpenSSL/1.1.1g-fips / libz: 1.2.11

I’m happy to report that ten minutes ago I updated the plugin and that immediately dropbox received new backup files.

Problem solved at your end. Well done and thanks to the devs, and to you for bringing the matter to their attention.
