I have a moderately heavy site, running Divi theme and an above the fold webm video. I use KeyCDN and W3TC to help cache pages & minimize requests. Though they do improve things in their own right, this plugin provided a handful of points on google’s site speed analyzer, and enormous gains via pingdom tools.
All the free online critical CSS generators were crap so I had to use a Chrome extension called “Critical CSS Extractor” to get what I needed for that field. I wasn’t willing to pay for the one by Jonas Ohlsson before even knowing if it worked or if I’d keep the plugin.
Each site is different and will take different tweaks to speed it up. So if you don’t know what you’re doing, of course you’re gonna have a tough time wingin’ it.
