Support » Plugin: WP Mail SMTP by WPForms » “Download Manager Pro” isn’t sending email lock mails since 1.7.1

After upgrading to 1.7.1 users are not receiving mails from the “email lock” function of “Download Manager Pro” any more. Downgrading to 1.7.0 fixes the problem.

    Is this a known problem?

  • WPDM support says their plugin is using the default WordPress function to send mails so the problem must be on your side. Please let me know if I can help isolating the problem.

    Hi @mroesele,

I apologize for the trouble. We don’t have any known issues with the update. Yes, WP Mail SMTP reconfigures the default WordPress function wp_mail() to either use proper SMTP host credentials or leverage a built-in SMTP mail provider. If the plugin you’re using is not sending emails with wp_mail(), the emails will not route through WP Mail SMTP.

Do you have any errors in sending test emails from WP Mail SMTP > Email Test? If so, please share the error log here.

    Thanks!

    Hi Sanjeev,

thanks for getting back to me!
Their support team confirmed that the plugin uses wp_mail and I can confirm that downgrading WP Mail SMTP to 1.7.0 fixes the problem.

I will check for errors in Email test later.

    Hi Sanjeev,

I took some time to dig deeper.

Here is a small testing protocol:

    I’m running WordPress 5.3

    WP Mail SMTP 1.7.0
    – Email test works: mail received
    – WordFence alerts working
    – Forgot password mail working
    – Contact Form 7 form working
    – Mail from Email Lock function received

    WP Mail SMTP 1.7.1
    – “Email test” works: mail received
    – WordFence alerts working
    – Forgot password mail working
    – Contact Form 7 form working
    – Mail from Email Lock function not received

debug.log shows no PHP warnings or fatal errors.

I installed “WP Mail Logging” by Mailpoet and the following error message shows up in the log but only for mails from the email lock function: SMTP Error: data not accepted.

As you can see above the problem only occurs for mails from this “email lock” function.

Funny enough the ajax request in the frontend returns success:

    {error: "", downloadurl: "",…}
    downloadurl: ""
    error: ""
msg: "Thank you for your interest! We've sent you an email with the download link."
    type: "success"

Which results in a green success message for the user.

However, switching back to 1.7.0 instantly restores the ability to send these mails and because WPDM Pro is using the wp_mail() function I guess this must be related to your plugin.

Is there something I can do to help you analyzing the problem?

    Best,

    Matthias

    Hi Matthias,

Thanks for the details! When you get a chance, could you please let me know the mailer you’re using? Also, please try checking the ‘Force From Email’ from WP Mail SMTP settings and sending the email you’re having an issue with receiving.

    Thanks!

Hi @mroesele – We haven’t heard from you in about a week, so I’m going to go ahead and mark this ticket resolved. If you still have questions, though, please feel welcome to continue the conversation.
