Roughly a month ago I started to get issues with downloads (customers complaining the link did not work). It ran smoothly for years.
Did anything change in your site prior to this issue?
Any download links are like reinterpreted by WordPress (?) and then no longer work. links refer to a non-existent subdomain.
Can you provide more information. For example: what is the link pointing too? Make sure you don’t share any personal or private information.
Could the issue also be related to a cache plugin?

Any changes on my website? I guess so, but I cannot locate the whereabouts. The plug-in seems to work, and links created by the plug-in do work. If these links are sent out per email from any place on the website, these links are changed and then match a subdomain (like https://url9249.[domain]). That information must be stored somewhere, and I have no clue where. It simply affects most heavily the links for downloads.
The subdomain did exist, but no longer does. I deleted the subdomain this week. Before and after the deletion, the link could not be found. The links still refer to that now non-existent subdomain.
I also tested with all plug-ins deactivated, but to no avail. The error persists. I therefore assume, the issue has to do with something stored a) in wordpress settings somehwere, (but I cannot find it), b) in .htaccess files, in server settings, or in the dispatch of emails (SendGrid). I am checking every step as good as I can, but lack proper understanding of why and where this could happen.
If you have any pointers, I’d be happy to hear them.

Have you entered the correct URL path in the following field Downloadable File (Visitors will download this item). This field is located when you create a download file. The following documentation has more information.

Thank you for your answer. Let me rephrase this:
The downloads worked for many years. While, at first, I thought there was an issue with the plug-in, I found that all links by Simple Download Monitor work fine, until (!) the link is dynamically recreated. Then, the basic URL from the website is changed, after which the combined total link no longer works. Today, I do not think it is an issue of the plug-in, but rather of WordPress. Something changed the basic URL and stored it in an invisible place, where some plugins take the information from and then get it wrong.
I use the plug-in correctly, I am sure. It worked flawless over years. It breaks due to (most likely) a hidden WordPress issue (stored in the database, .htacces-files or server settings).
Any suggestion will be gladly checked by me. Thank you for your assistance. If I find the issue, not only the SDM-plugin will work again, but it will probably solve all issues with this behavior.

Check to make sure you have the correct entry in the following fields. These fields are located under Settings -> General in your WordPress admin panel.
- WordPress Address (URL)
- Site Address (URL)
Also, if the above is correct, then make sure you also check your permalink structure. In regards to the permalink structure, the following link can help.
