Support » Alpha/Beta/RC » Downgrading from 2.5 to 2.3

  • Hi

Tried out 2.5 very nice but a few errors nothing to big, however reverting to 2.3 causes upgrade.php to fail

You get the “Database is out of date message” and then you go to a “cannot be displayed page…”

I think 2.5 does something to the database which cannot be changed

I could find no fix so reinstalled 2.5 otherwise you could not login.

  • You need to do a search on this board. 2.5 has a new way of storing passwords. If you revert back to 2.3, you just need to reset your password.

    HI Bryan

Its not the password its the database out of date message that stops you logging in, you cannot get past it…

Hey Cheaper, I wrote this solution on another thread, thought it might help.

Actually, you don’t need the old database at all. This is how I did it..

Export your data out as an XML file (use the “all” authors setting if there’s more than one)

Delete (or move to another directory) the version 2.5 files

    Create a new database

Upload the version 2.3.3 files, and install as “new”

Log in and delete the placeholder post (“hello world”). Also make sure that you re-create all the author names, if there is more than one.

Import in the XML file. (NOTE: If you have a lot of data, you may need to adjust the “upload_max_filesize” setting in php.ini..if you don’t have access to this file, contact your host was very cooperative)

That should do it. In my case, my theme was slightly out of whack, but nothing big.

Good luck, and long live 2.3.3!

Darkpress if we do as you said, we’ll have to loose all the incomming links.. as a result our page rank will go down.. I need to revert back to 2.3 back..!

2.5 spoiled my blog.. I can’t access my blog anymore!

i have the same issue…how do i get back onto my site?…i downgraded from 2.5 back to 2.3 and it says my password is incorrect??

actually 2.3.3…..why cant i log in with password?…what do i have to do?..above makes no sense to me…

In general, downgrading is NOT possible. Don’t try it in the future.

    Reverting to 2.3.3 from 2.5:

    Method 1:
    a) Restore your database from your backup.
    b) Revert all the WordPress files.

Method 2 (not guaranteed to work!):
    a) Change your password manually using phpMyAdmin (instructions: )
    b) Revert all the WordPress files.

where would i get the backup database from?

    i dont think i have one…

ps – i’ve already reverted to 2.3.3….do i need to go back to 2.5….save a backup and then revert again?

@ Otto: Ummm, downgrading IS possible, because I did it. Granted, it’s not the BEST way to go about it, but it IS possible. I posted the instructions to help those who either didn’t back up their database (like me) OR the database was corrupted by the 2.5 upgrade, which seems to be happening to many.

@ mayooresan: Why would you need to lose all incoming links. Don’t understand your comment, sorry.

@ tonyfloyd If you don’t have a database backup, you can use the method I posted above. Other than that, I don’t know what to tell you, sorry.

    darkpress…how do i export out???…if i cant log in??

@ Darkpress: Your “method” loses quite a lot of the content of the database. All the options for plugins and such, for one. All the blogroll links and such, for another. It also changes all the ID numbers of everything, which is hell if you have a highly customized theme.

Export and Import is not a sure method of downgrading and is not recommended.

    @ Darkpress
I got all my incumin links back!!!
if you use good permalink method then you won’t be loosing your incoming links, even if you restore your blog using XML file.

I upgraded back to 2.5! all probs occured bcos of incompatible template.

Read here how I over come that problem
