Hi! I have been using the Twenty Sixteen theme and I’d like to try the Twenty Seventeen theme for my blog. So, I installed Twenty Seventeen. Then, I went into Live Preview.

Here’s what’s happening. In the footer widget area, I am seeing two columns of widgets in Live Preview: The left column has the default Twenty Seventeen widgets. The right column has the widgets that I had set up for Twenty Sixteen! However, there seems to be no way to fix this in Live Preview. If I try deleting one set of widgets, they simply come back. However, if I go to any other WordPress theme that I have (say, Twenty Fifteen or Twenty Fourteen), I don’t have that issue. I only see one set of widgets.

I’d like to use Twenty Seventeen, but I don’t want two duplicate columns of footer widgets! How can I fix this? Thanks!

Check the Footer widgets. The repeated info might be there.

It is there, but if I remove the repeated info, it simply goes back in! I have tried uninstalling the theme and reinstalling it, but that does not help, either.

No matter what I try, when I am in Live Preview, the Twenty Seventeen widgets insist on showing both the default widgets for the theme and the changes I made – not to this theme, but to Twenty Sixteen! Very strange.

Whups. Sorry. I can see in your first question that you already were in footers. It might be possible that you are dealing with 2 knds of widgets … a combination of Footer and Sidebar.

How about this? Copy the samples and examples out of each widget and replace each with a different letter of the alphabet. Save all that. Then, go to Preview and see which letters show up. If you get information rather than letters, more detective work is necessary because you’ll know the widgets aren’t the problem.

I’m no techie; I’ve just been fooling around with this theme for a few days.

Is your Home page on the “slider”? (I don’t know what that vertical sliding bar is correctly called.) I found that if my static Home page was listed as appearing on the slider, the Preview showed the issue you describe above, but it doesn’t show up on the slider in the actual view.

Hi! Thanks for your suggestions. I’ll check out the “slider”.

Yesterday, while in Live Preview, I deleted everything in both widgets. That cleared everything in Live Preview from Widget 1. But the widgets I have on Twenty Sixteen still appeared on my home page in Live Preview, but to the right, where Widget 2 would put things.

I haven’t yet changed my blog to Twenty Seventeen. I have only recently changed my theme to Twenty Sixteen from a paid, third party theme, and I have been getting good feedback on the look of my blog now. I still like the looks of Twenty Seventeen, but if I can’t get it to look the way I want it to, it’s no big deal. I’m in no rush!

Still, I’d appreciate any other suggestions from you or anyone else, should anything else come to mind.

Hope someone else can get this figured out for you. Glad you are puzzled rather than frantic.
You mentioned “both widgets.” There are 3 widgets to deal with — Sidebar, Footer 1, Footer 2. Each seems to display in different places. “Sidebar” once appeared where I thought “Footer” should be. “Footer 2” surprised me in where it showed up.
Happy website to you! Sounds like you are doing good things and getting good feedback! Great!
