 * I have the same problem. I have tried both validation methods and both have been
   confirmed by my host GoDaddy but none seem to work.
 * Does the folder need a certain permission?

   to secure your sub-folders, you need to install SSL certificate on your main 
   domain, such as domain.com and it will secure all the sub-directories too.

 * After several attempts, it is my hosting provider ionos which blocks the ssl 
   creation process for shared hosting, whether in http or dns.
