  • If your WordPress files were deleted by a “Hacker”, then it’s because your ftp account, your cPanel credentials, or the server itself suffered a compromise. Not because of security issues with the current version of WordPress.

    they told me that word press files wp had been deleted by hacker

    If those are the words your hosts support staff actually used with you, you can;

    1) immediately suspect the veracity of the statement

    2) consider searching for a new host, rather than moving away from WordPress

    Wow… If that’s correct, it sounds very dodgy. Either that developer is doing something to delete the sites themseelf or they are ignorant about some issue that they are adding into the site. The biggest problem is that they don’t have backups, but then when you don’t have backups either it’s hard to point blame there too much.

    If you can get the site back, remember to always do your own backups on a set schedule and store them somewhere that you have access to. There is no excuse not to do this. That way if (when…) this happens again you’ll be able to restore your own back up files and you’ll be ready to go again. If you don’t know about backups, then talk to your hosting company about some extra backup systems and they’ll be able to help you to get something set up.

    I agree with michael.mariart.

    It sounds quite possible that your issues may very well be the end result of the shenanigans of that developer. It would certainly explain how the files could have gotten deleted.

    how would i stop the same person getting in

    The only way to be certain that person can’t access your site in the future, is to change the login information for your hosting account, as well as your ftp account, – not just your WordPress site password – and then make sure you delete any other ftp accounts that may have been set up in your cPanel without your knowledge.

    Make sure the only account that can access your site by ftp is yours, with the new credentials. Your hosts support team may be able to guide you through that process just to help you make sure there are no other accounts that can access your files using ftp or your control panel.
