• I’ve gotten really far with this Multi install project. And I’m getting close to finishing. I managed to get all 10 of my sub sites created and designed.

But now I have these ugly subsite URLs. I am looking to map them to domains I purchased from Godaddy. (My hosting is through Host Gator)

    Goal Ex.

    Change Example.mainsite.com
    To
    Example.com

I want to have valid SSL of course.

I originally followed a guide that used the Domain Mapping Multisite Plugin. However I ended up finding out it was outdated. Because with new WordPress updates. You can do it without a plug-in.
2nd guide I followed was here:

    WordPress Multisite Domain Mapping

This guide wasn’t very specific on how to point the DNS to my Multisite. And how does it change things If my domain and hosting are different companies.

Appreciate your help guys. Thanks in advance!

  • On a multisite, you’ll point the domain name at the same IP the root or main site points at via an ‘A’ record in the DNS settings of the new domain.

You can still use that plugin if you wish but you don’t need it anymore. Domain mapping was built into the newer multisite systems and it’s very easy.

The domain itself might need to be added to your hosting via add on domains and that is Add On the domain and point the directory for that domain at webroot which should probably be public_html at GoDaddy.

Let us know if you need anything else or further clarification.

    Appreciate your help!

In Godaddy (where I own my domain name I want to use) I created an A Record and pointed it to the IP of my main site. I also created a CNAME record with specifics on the subsite.

I think that part is good. Now I haven’t touched addons domains at all. I did have to set up my subsites in Cpanel. So the fact that I have to add the new domain name somewhere in cpanel makes sense.

Can you guide me through adding my new domain to my addons domains? I found it in Cpanel.

    It has 3 areas:
    New Domain Name __________
    Subdomain __________
    Document Root __________

What am I putting here? Is it just like it sounds? This is what I would think to put. Just want to verify

-www.godaddydomain.com (domain I want to use)
-Example.mainsite.com (subsite I want to link)
    -/public_html

I’m starting to to think add on domains have nothing to deal with this. I added it and all it did was create a new sub domain and folder on my server.

At first it wouldn’t let me create it because I already had a subdomain and DNS record with that name. (Because my subsite is the same as the domain I purchased) regardless. The add-on domain section doesnt seem to help me

Also, If someone can help me take a look. I’d be happy to pay for a little time. Or exchange for Graphic Design services.

Anyway, set the mapping and the DNS and try the site by the preferred domain name. If it doesn’t work (on GoDaddy I doubt it will) you then set the Add On domain name to the domain name you have registered, the subdomain can be set to www if you wish and the directory needs to be set to /public_html. That should work fine for the domain with and without the www but if not create a second Add On for the same domain and leave the subdomain empty. I don’t think the subdomain matters unless you want to use it also in other words.
