I am a network admin for two small schools in central Maine. I want to get one version of WordPress up and running for both schools for the sake of central management. So far so good, I have multi-site enabled with subdirectories (wildcard DNS is not an option here), and have the domain mapping plug-in installed and working.

I have blogs.schoolA.k12.me.us pointed to / in WordPress and blogs.schoolB.k12.me.us mapped to /school2 via the domain mapping plug-ing. Everything seems to be working nicely.

My question is this: Is it possible to create a new blog as a subdirectory of the new mapped domain? I can with the original domain, the one I used to set up multi-site, but can I with the mapped domain have a blog that would be something like blogs.schoolB.k12.me.us/test or something like that?

  • If you want that, then you;d need a multi-network plugin like this one:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-multi-network/

Which is a little harder to use once you’ve set the other site up. :-/ It creates the second network and maps the domain at the same time.

(also, hi from next door in New Brunswick! 😀 )

Thanks for the response. Fortunately for me, everything is still in the testing phase with no critical data as of yet, so if I need to, I can delete and reinstall.

I’m still amazed at how customizable WordPress is. I think it will be a great tool for our teachers and students.

Yeah, it’s being used a *lot* by schools and stuff. And even us homeschoolers. 😉

(Yep – great weather for sleeping now. 😀 I have a tree turning red right now.)

Are there any plug-ins that would enable me to enforce certain moderation settings on all networks and sites?

Like the settings panel for each blog, but for super admins?

Basically, I want to force registration and comment moderation on all blogs without having to change that setting on each one.

    Is this possible?

WP Replicator (a pay for plugin) may be what you want: http://wpebooks.com/replicator/
