Domain and Server switch (6 posts)

Hi guys - I know this question has been thrown around a few times, but I'm doing this site for a client and would like to appear confident in the next steps... even though I'm not! Shhhh, don't tell them.

Essentially, the site was build on a test domain (bought from GoDaddy) and hosted with Hostgator.

I need to change the domain and move the source files over to another server, replacing the client's current site with a shiny new one :p

I've been provided with server space (don't know who the FTP client is), so am ready to transfer the files.

Can someone please offer some guidance on next steps? I've located the nameservers for which the site is currently built on - is it as simple as updating the client's domain with the nameservers used on the dummy domain? I fear not...

Thanks in advance for any help.

As for moving the site, there are some steps you need to take once you've moved the files (and database) from your testbed to its new home, check out the codex here for that: http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

I'm not entirely clear what your question about the nameservers is, are you moving their hosting, or just moving your site to their existing server?

    Thanks for the fast reply!

I'm moving the site to their server... but it appears to be totally clean - so I think their current site is hosted elsewhere.

Is this something I need to find out?

    Thanks again,

Are they using the same domain name for the new site as their existing one? If so, the nameservers for that domain name will need to be set to the new server.

    Yes, that's correct.

So once the nameservers are updated, I'm thinking that all i need to do is amend wp-config.php to suit the new domain - and update image links/permalinks across the site via the dashboard?

It's a very small site (no more than 20 pages), so I've got no issues doing this manually.

Is there anything else I'm missing here?

Thanks again for the swift reply :-)

Theoretically, yes, that sounds correct. If you are changing URLs/links in the site, this plugin may be helpful:

Of course, make sure you are making back-ups throughout this process, just in case :).
