Support » Plugin: Phoenix Media Rename » Doesn’t support Swedish Characters

Overall, this is a great plugin. But it does not support the three extra Swedish characters in a file name:

    Å å
    Ä ä
    Ö ö

The “setting” for ignoring accents makes no difference. Maybe because they characters are not accented – rather they are three extra letters in the alphabet.

It would be wonderful if it could be fixed!

    Thank you, Nic!

    Hi @fletchni,
I’ll check it as soon as possible.

Thank you for reporting the issue!

I’ve checked the code: those characters are removed by WordPress.

Phoenix Media Rename uses the WordPress function sanitize_file_name() to ensure that the filename will be compatible with every Web server, those character are removed like any other ascii extended char.

I can add an option to completely remove filename sanitization, but this could lead to unwritable files, do you think this can be useful for you?

Do you have a reason to maintain those characters in file names?

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at this and to reply.

I would imagine it would be helpful, and I imagine that the risk will depend on the server OS and configuration that WordPress is running on. So, I guess such an option would need to come with a warning!

I probably wouldn’t have written, had I not seen the option you have for “Accents.” It is not a big deal for me… I am not a professional web developer, rather managing an association’s website. And there is no reason personally that it is a huge issue.

But I do work as an IT Manager in Sweden, and we see the Internet moving towards respecting other countries’ character sets. Indeed, many PDFs I download from other Swedish sites now have the correct characters in the file name. And in Scandinavian languages, there are no accents… these are three extra letters in the alphabet, so it can change the meaning of a word (although everyone will understand).

Sorry for a long reply, but wanted to be open: Not a big deal, we are used to it, but it is slowly becoming standard. And I know our WP site supports this, because if I use SFTP to upload a file with these characters in the filename and then just create my own link (without Media Manager) it works perfectly!

Thanks again for your reply, and I will let you decide if it is worth (and if you have the time)!

I usually prefer to be sure that everything works well: even in Italian we have accented characters that change the meaning of some word, but i replace them with standard ACII characters, to be sure that the site will work, even if it will be moved on a new server.

I’ll add the option you requested in a few days, I think it will be an easy implementation ^^

I’ll let you know as soon as the new release will be online.

    Thank you for your suggestion.

I just released version 3.4.1 that add the option to disable filename sanitization, to use the characters you have reported to me you must also disable the option “remove accents”.

Let me know if everything is running with the new version.
