    I just realized that with a plain install WordPress site in the admin area with no plugin with the default theme, the following tag gets inserted.

    <link rel="stylesheet" id="open-sans-css" href="//fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Open+Sans%3A300italic%2C400italic%2C600italic%2C300%2C400%2C600&subset=latin%2Clatin-ext&ver=4.0" type="text/css" media="all">

    I switched the theme to Twenty Thirteen from Twenty Fourteen but it did not remove it. I checked in Chrome, Firefox, IE and they all had the tag.
