Does having a lot of categories slow WP down, or increase server load?

  • Thousands? Sounds interesting. Seems like it would take a while to scroll down a page with thousands of categories, but maybe you are going to hack WordPress to only show the main categories, but then what? Sounds like trouble to me… maybe break up your data into smaller pieces and do multiple installs?

but how could i get them to work with each other?

basically i’m trying to create a database of articles about members of congress and senate, and other government officials. each official’s name would be a category. therefore there would be thousands of categories!

the reason: i’d like to be able for people to go to:

    mysite.com/john-doe

and see all articles pertaining to that person….

and that’s the only way i could think of to do it! is there a better way?

Tags might be a better solution. Check out the UltimateTagWarrior plugin.

It is no problem to use that many categories unless you try to display all of them on one page. It should not be a performance issue, i.e. it is only if WordPress is programmed badly, wich is not the case, in my opinion.

BTW: The technology of tags and categories is exactly the same, so it doesn’t matter what you use, but you should keep in mind, that using UTW you will have to systems doing basicaly the same thing. That is why I prefer Cat2Tag (only in the case, that you want to use Tags at all)
