Support » Fixing WordPress » !Doctype whitespace issue

  • Hi everyone, i am about ready to pull my hair out over this, so if anyone could help, i’d be grateful!

I created a ssite on domain “A” which works and renders fine. I then migrated it over to domain “B” (on a completely different server and different host). The problem is the site doesn’t render correctly. After hours of troubleshooting, it looks like there are some hidden or white space before my <!Doctype declaration which is causing the problem. These characters do not appear in header.php, they must be getting added as the page is being loaded. Any thoughts? What is strange is that the problem doesn’t occur on domain “A” just on domain “B”. Help!!

    Thanks

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

No, haven’t done either of those things for the reason being that the files and database tables are literal copies of a site which works fine on another server. Am I incorrect in assuming that the copies should work in exactly the same manner?

Not necessarily if the servers are different.

I deactivated the plug-ins and all was the same. When I switched to the default theme, everything looked fine. Obviously there is something in the theme causing the disturbance. Any thoughts on next steps? Thx

I’d suggest going through all files in your theme and removing any leading or trailing blank lines or spaces.
