  • In case the topic title is not clear enough, let’s say a blog has the subcategory, Puppies (catID-4), which is a subcategory of Malamutes (catID-17), which is a subcategory of the category, Working Breeds (catID-10).

Now Working Breeds has a special category theme applied to it separate from the index theme while Puppies and Malamutes do not. Because I am assuming that the subcategories inherit any values of its parentel categories that when someone clicks Puppies, the same Working Breeds theme would be applied to all its posts including those posts where the author only ticked the category box for Puppies. Meaning, the category boxes for Malamutes and Working Breeds were not ticked.

Am I assuming correctly then that a page of Puppies posts, regardless of parental category selections by the author, will look like a page of Working Breeds posts?

  • If by special category theme applied you mean a file category-10.php I don’t think the “children” will follow the parent…
According to the Codex category 17 and 4 will look first for their own template file and, if not found, for category.php etc. But not for category-10.php file!

Thanks, moshu. I was hoping the lack of discussion in front of the children meant the codex was incomplete. Sigh. Guess I will proceed knowing there may be a lot of “needless” duplication involved.

webdawg that is not quite right. You can associate any page with any template or one made for that purpose. Or by using the correct selectors for that page you can adjust the css.
