• If I could give it 0 stars I would. We made the mistake of getting Directorist last March. It’s ‘clunky’ to work with and feels like it’s been patched together here and there. I used to design websites and created a directory many years ago, before WordPress was created. It was 100 times easier to work with than Directorist. Overall Directorist was good in the beginning and it had the features we wanted. BUT – after a small update they made, then a big update later on, our directory has been going downhill for months (since June, with the worst problems starting around October – November with their update). We have needed to deal with them many times with things going wrong. They’re across the ocean so the time difference is a pain. Support is painfully slow to get working on things (probably because they’re having so many problems). All sorts of things have screwed up. We can’t promote ourselves because of all the problems. Being a new organization, this has caused us to lose a lot of faith in the eyes of the public and who knows how many potential members. Users can’t create or change their listings, descriptions within each listing does not display anymore, expiry dates of listings are wrong and we can’t change them, automatic renewal emails are not working, filter search won’t work if you have an apostrophe such as Joe’s Place, the search options have changed and aren’t working properly, at one point for a long time, the search buttons disappeared so people couldn’t even search for something, there are now 2 search buttons on the mobile device when just 1 is on the desktop, not all member listings are being displayed, member listings are supposed to be displayed first then the free listings but that’s not happening now, selecting the ‘member’ and ‘featured’ option in the ‘directory listings’ doesn’t work so they don’t appear as members, when members try to login, they now get looped into a circle and taken to a page that they shouldn’t be taken to, if a member is listed under a category and a sub-category, it may not be displayed in one or the other using a search, when looking for a listing by location, it seems to go based on distance instead of picking up on the city they clicked on when creating their listing. They’ve been working on most of the stuff above since October. IT IS A MESS! BE AWARE – DO NOT USE DIRECTORIST !!!!!!! We are actively searching for a different plugin or software program that we can escape this terrible plugin.

    Hello ents2 !

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review of your experience. We truly value customer feedback as it helps us identify areas for improvement. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that you’ve encountered so many issues, and we completely understand your frustration. Your feedback is important to us, and we’re working hard to improve the product. Please note that Version 8 was a significant update focused on enhancing the overall functionality and performance of the product. While it initially led to some layout and functionality issues, these changes are intended to provide long-term improvements. We are actively working on stabilizing the plugin, and it is now in a better position than before. Your feedback plays a vital role in helping us achieve our goals, and we remain committed to delivering a more reliable and user-friendly product moving forward.

    Regarding the issues you mentioned:

    1. Users can’t create or change their listings: We have thoroughly tested this on our end and confirmed it should be working correctly. If you continue experiencing this, please create a support ticket with more details, and we’ll investigate further.
    2. Descriptions within each listing do not display anymore: This issue does not appear on our tests. It could be due to a configuration issue on your end. Please feel free to reach out with more specifics via support, and we’ll assist you right away.
    3. Expiry dates of listings are wrong and can’t be changed: We’ve identified the issue, and it’s related to pricing plans. A fix will be released tomorrow, which should resolve this problem.
    4. Automatic renewal emails are not working: We are addressing this in an upcoming update, which will be released soon.
    5. Filter search not working with apostrophes: This is already in progress and will be fixed in an upcoming version.
    6. Search options not working properly after v8: Version 8 introduced an AJAX search, which is working well in our environment. If the issue persists on your site, we encourage you to open a ticket so we can further investigate.
    7. Two search buttons on mobile: This issue is not supposed to be occurring. Could you kindly provide a screenshot so we can better understand what’s happening? We’ll investigate this further once we have more information.
    8. Not all member listings are being displayed: All published listings should be visible on the front end based on the conditions you’ve set. If some are missing, it would be helpful if you could mention this in the support ticket so we can assist in resolving it.
    9. Featured listings not showing first: The order of featured listings depends on the pricing plan order you set when creating the plan. Listings in higher-tier plans will appear first, as they take priority. Please check that the pricing plan settings are configured as you intended.
    10. ‘Member’ and ‘Featured’ options not working: Could you provide more details about the specific issues you’re experiencing with these options? This will help us resolve the problem more efficiently.
    11. Login redirection issue: We are aware of this issue and are actively working on a fix. It will be addressed in the upcoming version of Directorist.
    12. Category and sub-category listings not displaying: Listings under categories and sub-categories will be displayed on their respective category pages. Each sub-category will have its own dedicated page displaying listings related to that sub-category. Please ensure you’re looking at the appropriate category or sub-category page.
    13. Location-based search issue: Directorist offers two types of location-based searches: one based on the listing location (through the taxonomy) and another through geolocation (address-based search). It seems like you’re using the geolocation search but are expecting results based on the listing location. To fix this, please navigate to Directory Listings > Directory Builder > Search Form Location and select Display from Listing Location.

In 2025, we are committed to prioritizing our customers and improving the product to meet your needs. We are focused on enhancing Directorist and stabilizing its features to ensure it works smoothly for all users. Over the next few months, you will see significant updates across the platform, including improved support and overall product performance.

Once again, thank you for your patience and valuable feedback. We would deeply request you to mention all of these issues to our support channel and we will ensure all of these are addresses within the earliest possible time. We’re here to help!

    Best regards,

I agree that Directorist has become a nightmare ever since v8 update. I provided a plenty of feedback to directorist team and many other users have done the same, and all we get are empty promises. Just go through their Facebook page to read user complaints. I still have one site that I need to migrate away from Directorist to close this chapter. Support is terrible and they take days and weeks to reply with most useless responses.

If you want to build a directory site and are looking for out of the box solution, go for either Voxel or GeoDirectory and avoid Directorist and any product made by this team at all costs.
