    Hi,

I am new to this. I am running Vista.

When trying to use the template, it comes out in code. Do I need to have a host service before I can start building a web page on my laptop?

    Thanks for any help.

You can use WordPress on a local computer, but you need to use it in a server environment – see http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Installing_WordPress_on_your_own_Computer

The simple answer is YES, you need a web hosting. [moderated – please do not promote or discuss hosting on these forums per the guidelines]

By “simulated hosting environment” i refer to what is created on your PC by what is described on the link by WPyogi.

Thanks for your help. I have tried the recomendation by,WPyogi – without success. Although, I have not tried for very long,

I may try the host route tomorrow.

    Thanks for help!

@jamesjedi – please see this page re: hosting: http://wordpress.org/hosting/

There are many options and we encourage people to do their own research to find a good fit for their needs.

Here are some more detailed instructions for installing on your own computer (should be fine with vista):

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Test_Driving_WordPress#Installing_WordPress_on_Your_Windows_Desktop

This also tells you how to move it from your PC to a hosted site when you are ready.

Two thumbs up for that link courtneydawn. I like. I like.
Unfortunately it does not indicate how to move from PC to hosted site. Not yet at least.
    I quote:

Moving Your Test WordPress Site to Your Website

Coming soon – how to move your test site from your computer back live onto your host server site.

Plus, I just do not see it worth it to go through all of that instead of spending $12 for a whole year of hosting.
    I compare it to:
    1. One click to install WP site.
    2. If you got special code or template, then upload of that stuff and slight modification of a few files.
Doing FTP is not even needed.

jamesjedi, you are welcome. Glad I could help.
Although, now I am curious to know more about what specifically did not work when you tried the server on PC method? It should have worked on Vista.
