    Hello everyone,

I’m kind of lost here. I searched the forum and read the wikis about Multisite but I’m still not sure if it is what I need. So I’m hoping someone here can help me figure it out. I have used WP for simple websites before, but this is a whole new level for me.

    My challenge:
I need to set up a website for a multinational company. They want one global homepage (xxx.com) and individual country pages with tlds (xxx.de, xxx.sax, xxx.co.uk and so on), no subdomains or subdirectories. The global homepage should automatically display content in different categories sourced from the categories on the individual country pages.

    So my questions:
1.) Is it possible to have different tlds for individuall websites (that also have their own homepages) when having this sort of global homepag?

2.) Is the above possible with Multiside, using one host and one theme? or is there a better option?

Counting on your expertise, I know it’s confusing, I’m really confused myself the more I read…

    Best, Finnnn

I’m currently learning about multisites and I’ve read that you actually can use different domains or top level-domains using child sites.

You can configure a default theme for all child sites, but I have yet to figure out how to apply theme options on child sites as well…it’s possible to configure it manually if necessary.

I also often read that it is not advised to use multisites for clients.
Not sure why, but probably because of maintenance reasons.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello FadingMusic,

thanks a lot for your answer. I read as well that having different domains is somehow possible, I think by using the Domain Mapping Plugin.

I’m more concerned if it is possible that the websites are then working together, so that the main website is collecting/showing posts from the country sites (child sites).

I know this works for one homepage with subpages but I have no idea if it also works for a main domain with child sites….They must be connected somehow I guess…

Any idea to this as well?

Concerning the theme options I read somewhere that you can individually customize every site in the network with a theme using all individual theme options….but I’m a newbie to this.

I’m actually asking myself exactly the same question.

It is possible to somehow seamlessly connect the all child sites to the parent site, but it’s probably not easy to do and I really don’t know where to begin.

I guess writing down a rough sketch of what it is you want on paper, would be a good start. This way you at least have a clear goal. Internet tend to be cluttered with unrelated stuff.

You’ll probably going to need good managing software to manage all the child site. So far, I haven’t really found a free solution for that.

You can clone a “master” child site by using a free plugin, that’s a start.

Yeah you are right, sounds kind of like the same thing we are trying to accomplish.

I guess I will need a slightly more simple solution though, since I will have a very limited amount of sub-websites (like 5) and since I will be the only one who needs access preferences.

So it would be nice if someone could help us with some ideas.

Until then good luck for your project and if I come around a solution, I’ll surely let you know!

    To answer questions:
    1) Yes you can have multiple domains/tlds using the Domain Mapping plugin. But note that you may have more complex configurations… especially if you need to support ssl/https
    2) I think what you want to do is possible, but would require plugins.

WP multisite is ability to create separate sites using one WP codebase. Sharing content across sites is not natively supported. You either have to find a plugin that does exactly what you need or you have to write your own plugin.

    Thank you jkhongusc,

I don’t think I need ssl or https since it will be normal company websites, no shops etc. So it’s good to know that I can have multiple domains.

I think I also found a plugin that allows to exchange posts between websites.

I’ll go on looking into it. Thanks a lot for the input.

Just to finish this, I will now use the Domain Mapping Plugin (already installed it) for the tlds and I think I found a plugin for the “working together” part too, but its a bit old and I’ll make sure it works first before suggesting it as the solution.

    So thanks everyone!
