• I’ve got a new site & lets say the menu bar displays 8 pages open to the public, I want one of those tabs to be a “members” tab so that people who have signed up when they select that will be taken to another page (lets call it a lounge)where the menu bar there won’t even show those public pages but only the tabs for the members only area. I know I can password protect that initial members tab and create everything under that private but what’ll happen is the public tabs will remain and now with the additional private pages i’ll have a very fat stacked menu which i don’t want.

I emailed my host about it & it was they who suggested a network so I followed the instructions & set it up. I would have prefered (for example)
    but it came out
    joeblowspage.yournamehere.com

I seem to have everything on the back end to make it work but when trying to view what i just setup I keep getting an “oops” from google.

Now i noticed while reading the network setup there was a link to this
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Before_You_Create_A_Network
and in the text it says:

“For example, if all you want is for different collections of web pages to look very different, then you can probably achieve what you want in a single site by using a plugin to switch themes, templates, or stylesheets.
For another example, if all you want is for different groups of users to have access to different information, then you can probably achieve what you want in a single site by using a plugin to switch capabilities, menus, and link URLs.”

Sadly it doesn’t suggest any plugins that could do the things i want but I really need to know if the idea I’ve laid out is something that can be done with plugins or if a network is the way to go. Because I’m at my wits end with this.
I posted in “how to & troubleshooting” but in an hour or so any post is already pushed back to page 2 or 3 to die a withering death.

If there is someplace i can pay to get an answer please, i’m open to all suggestions.

    Thanks for your consideration

  • Hi, at this point I think you can achieve your goal with both options : network or plugin.
At this point I don’t know any already built plugin that can serve your needs but you can create one at hook it to the navigation menu to display only the desired pages for your members.
You’ll have to write some code to achieve this but you can do it.
For a starting point you can check the codex for help about how to hook a plugin and other info.
If the link it’s getting you to a function that doesn’t help you, check the “Related” functions one of them should do it.

    You picked a subdomain install.
