Support » Plugin: Reading Time WP » Displaying reading time in minutes value in a posts grid plugin

Hello, and thank you for the amazing plugin! We have been using it for a long while now on, where I curate content, to display the approximate reading time of the stories we feature. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into your work!

I am also utilizing Content Views (, a post grid program, to display recent and top-ranked stories, and the site allows content to be sorted by things like categories, author, ratings, etc.

I wanted to see if it was possible to also create a “sorted by reading time” page, but I didn’t notice this capability built into your plugin by default. I have searched the Support forums to see if similar questions have been asked, but don’t see anything specific to my needs.

Basically, Content Views can order posts according to Taxonomies and Field values, including Custom Fields. I know that Reading Time WP parses the post pages, determines the number of words/characters, does the math, and then displays the result, but I believe it does this in real time, am I right? It is not storing this data (the resulting value in minutes) in the database anywhere, am I right? Please correct me if I am wrong.

My question is: is there any way to get a plugin like Content Views, which uses field and taxonomy values, to display the Reading Time WP values, without being on the actual post page itself? I am not sure what the best way to go about this would be.

Also, would you happen to have any plans to introduce a Sync Meta type feature in your plugin, which DOES export the reading time values to a table in the database, for retrieval via a field name, rather than generating them on the fly? This would reduce load on the system, I would imagine, and a caching system could be utilized which resets every so often, to check for changes to pages, and do recalculations.

If your plugin synced the results to a database, then I would already have this feature implemented, and would be able to sort by this value, which would be incredible.

Please let me know if there are any plans to add such a feature, or if you know of another way, using PHP functions via shortcodes, etc. that I can use to pull the values for use in Content Views.

    Thank you very much!

    Hi there,

Thanks for using the plugin. I don’t have plans currently to add storing the reading time into the post meta. That would likely be the best way to allow for ordering as well. It’s an interesting idea for a future and I’ve added it to my list of possible future features.

If you, or anyone that comes across this, would like to take a shot at adding in the functionality yourself there is a Github repository for the plugin here:

Always willing to take a look at PRs.
