This is definitely possible to do with Custom Sidebars. To display specific sidebar on archive pages such as this one please go to Appearance -> Widgets, click on the Sidebar Location for sidebar that you want to show there and then select Category Archives tab in For Archives accordion where you will be able to select specific category pages where this sidebar is going to be replaced, see screenshot http://screencast.com/t/DkhZyaBUo2.

Hi Bojan,
I was wondering if I can have a custom sidebar in the category first page.
I have my custom sidebar in every categorized post but the first page http://www.domain.com/category/example/ is still showing me Global Sidebar.
I marked the checkbox “As Global Sidebar for selected categories” and selected the category but that does not seem to work.
