 * So everything was fine with the plugin until my magazine just went live today.
Now suddenly articles which are supposed to be available to the public aren’t.
When I check to see if those articles are protected they are, without my having
ticked the box and with no way of removing the protected status. It says they
are within a category that is protected but when i check those categories, they
are not listed as protected. (Yes, multiple categories – none of my site is available
   to the public)
It’s very frustrating as now all the PR sending people to the
site is sending them to a site they can’t access. please advise.

 * So trace back, what have to done to change it from “yesterday” and today when
   you made it live.
 * if you change it back to not live, does it work?
 * Unfortunately there is not enough info above to help you,
    can you please explain
more of what the difference was between then and now.
 * If your whole site not accessible now.. so when they come to your site it doesn’t
show or is it only certain parts not accessible..

 * Honestly Pete… last night I went to bed, the whole thing was perfect.
    This morning
it’s not. As far as I know nothing changed. I checked the logs to see if I was
hacked and nothing showing. When I say – went live – i just mean I made announcements
to the world that the site exists. Nothing real changed. They can enter the homepage
and menus etc but the posts are not showing unless they are logged in. And of
course there is nothing to entice them to register. I turned off the plugin and
nothing changed. Then I turned off Theme my Login and suddenly the posts reappeared
but I was unable to get into my dashboard and no longer have subscriptions. Basically,
on the back end a post has an asterisk next to it saying that it is protected
because it is in the protected category, only those categories are not checked
as protected. And because they are not checked I cannot uncheck them. I understand
it’s not a lot to go on. But I am at the end of my tether. i have also written
   to theme my login.

 * I guess I have to ask the obvious, but did you have a backup?
 * I dont think there were any auto updates of wordpress last night ( our time,
Yes am in Brisbane myself) either.
I cant see why TML would cause it…
 * But then sometimes strange things happen..
 * Do you have any security plugins running..
    Can you resave permalinks again..“
Sometimes” with WP saving permalinks does help but depends on the problem..
 * Sorry clutching at straws for you here but just going thru possible problems.

 * Everything is backed up to dropbox yes.
I de-activated both plugins and then
activated again, now a few of the categories have become unrestricted but not
all of them. I do have security plugins running. I changed security two days
ago when my site got hacked. I have firewalls up .. I ran scans for malicious
code and the scans found nothing. I have checked the settings on security and
can find nothing that would make posts restricted. Not sure what you mean by
   saving permalinks.

 * Oh ok so your site was hacked…
when I site is hacked there are many things that
can be done. and not all scans will find it..
 * Permalinks – go to Settings and then click on Permalinks. More than likely the
setting will be against Post Name.
click one of the other settings and Save.
then choose Post Name again and click Save
 * if this doesnt help I would be loading files back over the site from the backup..
   using FTP
Start with WP core files only.. Then theme etc ( hoping that no files
changes have been done by you in the main files..) ( you should always have a
child theme set up if you are going to change file code)

 * Pete thank you so much for your support. I really appreciate it.
    I hope I’m
not about to jinx it when i say – I believe the problem is solved. I went through
all the steps you suggested. I left restoring the theme til last as I had made
a few changes and have no idea what the whole child/parent thing was even. The
theme restoration seems to have done it. If you feel like checking the site out
it’s kissthecore.com – a cultural magazine for brisbane and gold coast. If you
set up a public registration, I’d be happy to upgrade you to full access keyholder
for free. You’re a good chap. Have a great day.

 * Fantastic
I am glad you got it solved
 * Thanks for letting us know
 * Just to add about the Child Theme for you and others..
 * A Child Theme is basically another theme that has ( at for) 3 or 4 files in it.
It then references back to the main theme to pull all the details etc from it..

If you ever have to do any modifications to the main theme, you would generally
to them in the child theme so that when the Main theme was updated, you would
not loose those changes by over writing them by updating the main theme.
 * _A child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality and styling of another
theme, called the parent theme. Child themes are the recommended way of modifying
   an existing theme. _
 * Many themes now have an area where you can do some CSS Custom coding, however
there are still those that dont so a child theme is important in that instance.

 * So… I don’t know if this means anything but…
the posts that are supposed to
be showing public are still showing public in the site, but when i investigate
the back end, they are still being listed with the asterix saying : * This post
is already protected for this level because it is within a category that requires
membership. Even though it’s not true. Even though that category, that page is
unticked. It worries me that because those categories are still registering as
restricted, at some point the whole thing could just revert again. You have any
   thoughts on that?

 * Hey there Pete…
I thought I ought to let you know… my site has not been hacked
again but… the issue has re-occurred. Non of my posts are available to the public
no matter what i do. The plugin is assigning everything as membership required
regardless of which box is ticked. It’s a serious issue for my business because
it is making most readers turn away instantly. I am having trouble understanding,
if the issue was definitely resolved, why would it happen again? I resolved it
last time by reloading the theme from my last back-up. I can’t keep doing that
once a week. Do you have any suggestions? Has anyone else out there bumped into
   this problem? Thanks Mark
