• The recent update to version 5.12 has created a lot of problems, and for no real benefits I can see. Formerly I could set the plugin to backup my site once a month to Dropbox. Now that still works, but there seems to be no way to prevent it from making and storing another copy of my server, resulting in all sorts of warnings from my host that I am over storage limits. There’s no way to switch the option off! And, worse, no way to set it to delete auto-stored versions. So now, every time it backs up to Dropbox for me, I have to log in to the back end of the site and manually delete the bloat of unnecessary and unwanted backups. It’s a real mess. I can see that 5.09 still works fine on another site, so I’m going back (and relieved to find that I can) while I consider whether to change backup plugins entirely. What’s the saying: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I’ve used this plugin for years and found it great. It’s hard to understand why core functionality has to suffer in the cause of a new interface.

Actually I think the five stars was the default so I’ve edited it now to 3. The previous version 5.09 still works perfectly, it’s just from 5.12, I think it is, that things went awry. And, to my mind, it’s still better than Updraft Plus because for a handful of sites, this is still free and, until now, totally reliable. Make of that what you will.

    Hi @patboran,

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback — and for your years of trust in BackWPup.

You’re absolutely right: in the current version, there’s an issue where the “Local Storage” option can’t be deselected. That’s why backups are being stored both locally and to Dropbox, which is especially problematic for users with storage limitations. We’re aware of this and already working on a fix to allow complete control over where your backups are stored.

In the meantime, you can try creating separate jobs with different destinations or manually delete local backups if needed — but we agree, that’s far from ideal.

We really appreciate your patience and the fact that you’re still finding value in the plugin despite these setbacks. If upcoming updates improve your experience, we’d love to know. Thanks again for the honest review.
