Sweet. Now how do you prevent spam accounts though?? Seems too many steps for spammers though. Need to remember the pw or copy it down before logging in, which is good.

  5. I use BadBehavior (a plugin) and then this in my .htaccess:

     RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} POST
     RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} .wp-signup.php*
     RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !.*domain.com.* [OR]
     RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^$
     RewriteRule (.*) http://lmgtfy.com/?q=spammer [R=301,L]

Which says 'If people are hitting up the URL with data, and they're NOT coming from clicking 'submit' on my signup page, they're a spammer, and must die.'

  6. @sharris spammers use a bot to sign up to your site. there's no actual person looking at the signup page or writing down the passwords. ;)

Also, removing the email verification actually gives them one less step. it's good in *some* cases - like what dsader uses above, his users are all coming from the same email domain.

Yea I was thinking more of pranksters rather than spammers. For bots the step of needing to login on the page after signup appears to make up for no email verification. This plugin along with User Spam Remover can auto-delete users who never log in.

I think this is close to what I need, I am trying to make a simple chat type situation, where the user can put their name and email, without email verification. Would I just style the comments to use as the chat or is there a way to make posts, or what would be better??

  10. webmaster in texas - That's a totally different thing. Please make a new topic.

This one is about not getting emailed when people register.
