Support » Fixing WordPress » Disable category "uncategorized" except on uncategorized posts?

  • Here is specifically what I want to accomplish: have WordPress implement its default category option only on posts published without any other categories.

I run a multi-author WordPress blog and the default category option is automatically checked in the posting template. Very occasionally an author will uncheck the default category when checking additional categories, but usually not. Consequently, there is an over-buildup of posts categorized “this” and “that”, but also “posting”, where “posting” is the “uncategorized” default category or its generic replacement.

I already understand that a) a defult category is hard coded in the WP core and b) the default category “uncategorized” can be renamed or reassigned to another category name.

Is there a plugin or hack that would allow me to force WordPress to assign its required default category upon publication only after the fact of no other categories having been chosen, not before, and not automatically in addition to elective categories?

    Thanks in advance.
