Support » Installing WordPress » Directories CANNOT be created in my Linux therefor 404

  • Okay, long story short, and this is weird:

My configuration: Apache, PHP, Mysql, WordPress

My installation went pretty well actually, everything is fine.

Question is when I wrote a post, why it didn’t create directories under my wordpress directory.

    Like this IP/wordpress/2008/01/22/second-post/

I checked out the wordpress directory, the 2008, 01 , 22 directories weren’t created at all, that’s why when I go to that link, it displays 404. I have actually chmod 777 on that wordpress directory, so I don’t think it’s the problem of writable or not.

    Any thoughts, everyone?

  • wordpress doesnt create directories. your posts are stored in a mysql database. the “illusion” of directories is a function of having pretty permalinks enabled.

Hello, homeycomb, thanks for the quick reply. So you think the problem is the posts weren’t actually written into mysql?

I can see the post on the ip/wordpress link. It only shows the problem when I tried to comment or check the whole post by clicking on the title.

    Thoughts?

    Did I say that? No.

I said that WordPress doesnt create directories. That there is an illusion of directories that is created when you use pretty permalinks.

I can see the post on the ip/wordpress link.

Then obviously the post made it into the database, eh?

Update your permalink structure in the wp-admin area.

Problem solved by using the default permalinks.

Thanks homeycomb. I’m wondering why I cannot use the name and date based permalinks.

First thing I would look at is whether or not you have mod_rewrite available. yes/NO –> take it from there, thise pages go through just about everything. Just remember that you are not going to see any directories created, thats not how it works.
