I have a WordPress multisite install. I am having a problem whereby empty directories are occasionally being created (not by me) in the root directory whose names match the names of some of my WordPress sites. Because of the way .htaccess is set up for WordPress, if these directories exist then the site does not display.

It’s the same problem as noted here without resolution. It seems likely that something is automatically creating them, but I don’t know what.

It happened about three weeks ago and again today. The intermittency means it’s hard to test. Any suggestions on how I could go about investigating this?

  • Bump. It happened again last night. I assume some plugin is creating these directories monthly, but I can’t find anything that the sites for which this happens have in common that they don’t share with sites for which it doesn’t happen. Can anyone help?

    Hi rhiannon-ppl,

To start off with, I would configure the root directory with Read Only permissions. Like this new directories will not be created. Having said that, if you would like to solve the problem, you can always ask your Hosting Provider to monitor such file creations to find out which process is causing it. Do not know if your hosting provider provides such a service though.

Aha. I found the solution here. I had subdomains set up for those sites initially, but very early on switched to subdirectories because of DNS problems. I never went back and deleted the subdomains. I’ve removed them now, and am hopeful that this will solve the problem.
