I know, biggest mistake EVER… I did not use a child theme in modifying the Twenty Eleven theme and after I modified a lot of it… it hit me…. that EVERYTHING will be gone once an update comes out.. and twenty twelve theme will definitely always have updates, being the core theme.

It’s too late to backtrack and do it the right way… so is there any way I can break the link to twenty eleven by renaming the theme? I know I can FTP it to my computer and rename it and install it as if it was a unique theme built by me. But what parts do I have to rename to be SURE it is totally disassociated with Twenty Twelve? Just the title in the styles.css file? … or other parts as well?

PLEASE HELP… it’s literally like a ticking time bomb before all my edits get lost…

  • If you duplicate the Twenty Eleven theme folder and call it something else and choose that theme in your themes in the back end you will be fine 😉

    Thank you!!

    Hi

I have a question, but if there are upgrades to the theme using that method of creating a child theme, would your site received the updates?

Nope. Using that method means that the theme you’ve copied and given a new name will not get updated when the updates are published for the original theme.

It’s one of the reasons we’re all recommend child themes.

Also, going forward please post your own topic. This one was already marked resolved.
