Development Environment

    Is there any way to set up a development environment inside your WP installation such that you can develop a theme in view of others on the project, press activate, and have it go live?

    Recent updates to WordPress have made that more possible, but entirely.

    Typically I’ve created a test installation, but then you have to move things over–sometimes mixing content from the test installation with the old content.

    I develop in a subdomain. Just using a subdirectory never seems to work right for me.

    When I’m ready to go live I download everything (old and new) to my workstation for safe keeping. I delete everything in the root and move the new site there.

    The concept of moving a site to the root directory is very well documented and not really that hard to get the link issues sorted. I just did this process earlier this week. It took less than 30 minutes. Most of the time was waiting for the download.
