• Hi guys,

This may be a dumb question but here goes! I am migrating a large membership site to WP and client wants to use multisite as there will be a second site that they want to run alongside. The idea being that new members on the second site will be able to access content on the primary site with the same login details.

My question at the moment is what is the best way to develop the primary site when the domain name is already in use and the site in its old format cannot be taken offline? I figured I’d just develop it on a dev domain as a non-multisite to allow for testing and then when it was all finalised take the original site offline for as little time as possible to update to multisite, switch to the correct domain and import the members. The second site would come later.

    Is there a better way?

    Thanks in advance.

It’s not really super easy yet :/

I would build it all locally (or on a test box) with realdomainname.loc as the address, where my URL was the same length as the real one. Then when I’m ready to go, just edit the DB to the right domain and copy it all up.

    Hi,

thanks for your quick reply! I shall research developing WP locally as this isn’t something I’ve done before. A new challenge 🙂
