We are going to redesign our website. What we would like to do is create a multi-site network. Currently we do not use multi-site and the site has gotten too big. We have 3 distinct users that would benefit from having their owne site. Is it better to have 3 different installs or use a multi-site. I’m worried about the space that different wordpress installs would create. Or is WordPress fairly small in size?

    site has gotten too big.

WordPress itself (the core code) is fairly small — is about 30MB.

My experience is that, once a site is set up, it grows due to stuff being uploaded into wp-content/uploads. Going from 3 single sites to multisite won’t solve that. Check the uploads to see what your users are uploading. On one of my client sites, I saw that useers were uploading 29MB and over 11000px wide(yes, really!) images becaue “the site just shows them correctly”. I had to do a little bit of education about uploading images in the maximum size useful on the site (which was 1050px).
