I am trying to add a link to a post on our blog. I am a newbie to WordPress, so please be gentle with me. :-)

Below is the paragraph, followed by the link I am trying to add. I was trying to set it up so when you clicked on the word "link", it would go directly to the article.

I followed the directions in troubleshooting regarding how to make the link work and it just doesn't want to work. I don't do code... Any help would be appreciated.

Please check out this link for an interview with ARC's Director of Interiors, Kelli Trebil.

"Honest Buildings" recently interviewed her about ARC International's commitment to sustainability and green building and how this focus was used in designing the SDGF&P Outdoor Campus in Rapid City, SD.

    It looks verynice,

You must be missing something, easy to do.

How are you linking to the word link?

Lets say Jeannie, so you would highlight that word then

    <a href="page url goes here/">Jeannie</a>

The word jeannie would then become active (clickable)

Highlight by dragging the mouse over the word Jeannie by left click in the document, then WordPress will auomatic add the link.

I am highlighting the word "link" going to the "Insert/Edit Link symbol, putting in the web address and clicking "insert link"

    Hi Jeanne,

What text are you trying to link and what is the address of the page you're trying to link it to?

    Thanks

    VW

The word "here" in the sentence that starts "Please click here...."

Okay so when you edit the post, make sure you are in 'Visual' mode rather than 'Text' (top left tabs of the edit box.

Select the text that you want to link so that it is highlighted (click and drag over the word).

Click the 'insert link' icon on the toolbar (looks like a chain link).

In the URL text box enter your target address (http://community.honestbuildings.com/spotlight-sdgfp-outdoor-campus/ without brackets of course)

Leave title, and lower half as is, and click 'Add link'.

This should work, if not come back with what it does/doesn't do - or perhaps update the post after going through these steps so I can see the code on your live page and I could take it further.

    Hello Vader!

That is what I did. Nothing happens for some reason. I am in the "visual" tab. I don't have a "text" tab, only "visual" or "html"

I have tried this at least a dozen time now. I am so frustrated. :-(
    This should be easy.

It doesn't work either on the link from the "Latest News Current Project" menu on the sidebar or when I click on "Read More"

Hi Jeanne, if you'd like me to check it out drop me an email with the login details and we'll get you up and running, and post the results back here for future reference. I'll be about for the next couple of hours :)

This should not be that hard. While editing the page in question, in the visual editor, click on the top right where it says "text". Find and replace the sentence:

Please click here to check out the interview with Kelli.

    with the following:

Please <a href="http://community.honestbuildings.com/spotlight-sdgfp-outdoor-campus/">click here</a> to check out the interview with Kelli.

    What theme are you using?

Try and use WordPress latest theme which I believe is TwentyFourteen to see if the 'text and Visual' appear on that theme.

Its easy to swap themes -->appearances -->choose from the default themes..

Or ask for an update of the theme you are using if its a bought theme.

All the above helpers advice should work really. believe me I have had my troubles, we all have with WordPress in the past but I never had this problem and I have used it since early 90s.

You know how to highlight words, you know WordPress will auto add the link whilst your still in the posting area.

If you have a host could you screenshot the WordPress like mine and give us the link please?

    http://www.flowersnpalms.com/mis/link3.jpg
    Just click the text

That shows my hightlited word, also the top menu which has the link attribute word my highlighted word will link to..If you understand what I mean.

Or, you can allow someone to login that knows the fix.

Christian, That fix worked. Julienne, I think the theme is old, but I am uncertain about updating and maybe We had a web designer that built it but wants to charge $75 just to look at it every time I can't figure something out...Gregor, I would have loved to get your help, but since it is the website of a company I work for and not my own, I don't have the authority to allow anyone access. :-( I do very much allow your offer to help, but can't break company rules. So it was frustrating knowing you could help, but I couldn't give out log-in info.

No problem, I thought that might have been the case - glad you're working again. If you need any more help just shout!

I know this is supposed to be easy, but I was handed the website with maybe a hour or so training and pretty crappy training at that, so when even the most simple things don't work, it is frustrating...so I can't tell you how much I appreciate the help. I think my theme and version of word press is super old, but our web designer told us NOT to update it for some reason. Made it sound like all would be lost if I did that. He is real helpful! :-)

Sounds like you need a replacement web dev who can future proof their code, or at least not shy away from adjusting existing projects when new versions are released with improved features - which have been implemented to make your WP-life easier. IMHO, the longer you leave the upgrade, the work involved will potentially increase - it certainly won't decrease.

Also I know there are companies who offer support packages which include a certain amount of phone based support which may be of value to you and make your WP-life less stressful!

    (P.S. I don't need $75 for this opinion!)

I couldn't agree with you more, Gregor. I am a graphic designer and photographer, but never got into web development. (I am old) This job was just thrown at me on top of the other stuff I do since no one else in the company wanted to do it. Our web designer has been hard to work with. The training provided was minimal. Every time I need to do an update I get a major anxiety attack since this is just a small part of my job...It is so frustrating to not be able to make things work, especially things that I know should be easy. And I don't have the time to just sit down and figure out the program on my own. :-( I really appreciate the suggestions and help that you and the others have given me on this forum have given me and I thank you for sticking with me until the problem was solved.

Not sure why my post page tabs don't show "text" and "visual" but show "visual" and "html" instead, except that our WordPress hasn't been updated for quite a while...and I am afraid to do it and mess up the whole site, which they told me might happen.

    :-)

Just out of interest, which version of WP are you on? If you go to <your URL>/wp-admin/ and login, it should show the version number in the bottom left.

    Mine is Version 3.8.1

Make sure you save everything then do an automatic update.

To save go to tools -> export. This will save your site in XML format, do that before you update.

    @Jeanne Apelseth
Just so we're clear, that really wasn't a "fix", that is literally how you create a link in HTML. As a suggestion, if you are going to administrate a website, I would recommend spending a couple hours on some basic HTML and CSS tutorials that will save you hours in the long run. And by the way, hyperlinking is probably one of the first things you will end up going over.
