Desperate need of help divs all over the place

  • so, here’s the site I’m trying to make work for someone: http://doulafran.com/test/wordpress-2.31/wordpress/

    Im trying to design everything inside the wrapper and center it, but as you can see, s**t has gone awry. None of the stuff wants to contain itself in my wrap div. My wrap div won’t center. my “content” wrap div (which i made green bordered) wont even contain the left middle and right divs that I need to go in there.

    I need serious ongoing help, cus I’ve been at this for two straight weeks now and have been unable to fix it (obviously). I can’t even get background images for divs to work! It’s pathetic how confused I am, but I know you knowledgeable gurus can help a girl out.

    Please please please hold my hand and help me walk over the firey pits of div insanity!

    this thing is gonna put me in Bellvue

  • One thing that strikes me right off the bat is that you are calling the style.css sheet twice. Calling a css file more than once can sometimes produce bellevuesque results.

    Not only that, but one time it is called as root-relative, the other time it is called as doc-relative. Don’t know what effect that might have.

    ok, I rectified that, but it didn’t change anything—

    if you could maybe take another look?

    help!

    I can tell you that anyone trying to fix your problem will have their work cut out for them, more so by trying to fix it remotely.

    Since the first HTML of your page’s source is:

    <div id="wrap">

    Your Template is the problem (most likely). You probably have one or more un-closed DIVs.

    No, i am well aware that anyone trying to help me is in for an epic amount of heroism 😛

    I know my template is the problem, since I put it together…

    but I think I checked unclosed divs but… how do I get the stuff to conform to the wrapper(s)?

    and where should my opening div for the wrap go? I havent figured this out yet… index or header?

    :<

    Ok, I checked, and there are no unclosed divs. I counted >.< please rescue me!

    @kmessinger

    You seem to have miscounted. Validate your code here and you will see div and other problems.

    That will be a start.

    OMG I used the nifty validation tool and tried to fix its errors…. and now it’s more screwed up than before :<

    Let’s get back to the basics:
    http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp
    You should understand the basic structure of a website: you cannot have html tags (divs or otherwise) outside of the body portion of your code. Period.
    Go and look at your source code!

    so… I have to contain my wrapper and the div announcing the header….after all my headscript?

    I was reading some tutorials that had :div id=wrap: :div id=header: :php get header:

    so that’s why I’m confused…….

    Sorry, no matter what you have read (or misread) – any webpage must have this basic structure:

    Doctype declaration...
    <html>
    <head>
    ...meta tags here...
    </head>
    <body>
    all your HTML here
    ...
    </body>
    </html>

    You can have html tags (like div etc.) ONLY between the opening body and closing /body.

    Now, the WP theme system, actually “sliced” up a nice big long index file into pieces, and they come together as shown here.
    I hope this helps to understand how it works.

    yeah I read that article. I think I’m just really confused about the whole thing and maybe I should just go back to slicing up my original “HTML” layout -_- and see what I can do. start from scratch, like.

    Thanks for the help, and I’ll post again to let you know when I screw something else up
