• Howdy, folks!
Is there any interest in holding a design “contest” for WP templates/skins/layouts? I recall reading about Blogger doing something like that. I thought it might be a fun way to get the community working on their design ideas. The WP members could vote on their favourite designs, and perhaps some or all of the designs could be included with the basic WP install package.
I think that not only the design of the site is important, but the way the skin/template is documented would be part of the judging, too. I would even volunteer to host the contest on my site, if needed, as well as flesh out the concept and rules, with the help of all those interested. Maybe this would be a good thing to run in the New Year, after the holidays.
    Comments?
    Craig.

    what do we win? πŸ˜›

Not that I want to get into an argument, but Opera=bloated πŸ™‚

Yes let’s not go there. What do you win? Right now just recognition and a warm fuzzy feeling but I’ll try to get some prizes going. If I can’t get anything I’ll just chip in some of my own cash and buy something off the winner’s wish list.

Entry Number one from the scotsman…

Thanks to Craig (NuclearMoose) for helping me with a CSS problem – it now works as expected in IE5, 5.5. 6 Firebird 0.7 Netscape 7.1 on WinXP (so I can’t take all the credit).
Standard template from WP 0.72 GOLD used. – only CSS used as requested
If anyone finds any problems please drop me a line (the internal links won’t work as I saved the default page as produced by index.php as an html file so I could host it outwith my document root – basic posting text has been changed for some lorum ipsum to help me see what was happening a bit clearer)

At least the folks at Opera listen to their users. When was the last time you were able to get in touch with Microsoft to have a feature included in IE?

hmm. another opera forum junkie here. won’t argue more. people who use opera know what an incredible piece of software they have and how nice people their are at the opera forum :P.
WP is another such cool forum and another incredible piece of software.
Coming back to the topic. Would not it be better if the contestants post the link to the CSS file so that not-so-geek users like me could test it in the real world for its practicality. πŸ™‚

I’d enter, but most of the tricks I’ve done required markup changes via the index file or the templatefunctions file.. Yeah, sometimes you can overdo the use of spans and divs, but the point of extensive markup is that everything is bracketed in such a way that the CSS can be used to really do just about anything needed. Some of my latest updates on http://www.chait.net were only possible once I added a bunch of markup to index… even if you use <h2> instead of <div class=title>, you are adding useful markup that the default file is lacking.

    arthuc01,
Are you making your CSS file for your design available? If you are, I would be very interested in using it. My knowledge of CSS is very elementary, so at this point, I mostly modify other designs that are predone.

http://www.lineages.co.uk/chris/test/wp-layout.css here is the link to css.
but without the images the page is not visually appealing…

Thanks. I guess I should have known that the wp-layout.css would be the default used. I can supply my own images, but I am still learning on the formatting part.

oh, for the css part you just need to check the source code.
alt-F3 in Opera, Alt V C in IE, Ctrl U in Mozilla.

Hi folks, my weblog @ blog.lennartgroetzbach.de is not finished yet, but what is? I changed some minor things in the index.php like the email link, the permanent link and the comment link. I added a couple of hacks and made some changes myself (the authors box and the last-x-comments box). I will change the css code for the comment display for a single entry, but beside that the css file is kind of complete.
Take a look if you like…

I’d like to see some of Michael’s customizations… BB is a very clean looking site, but has some really nice touches (the inverting links for one, the popup inverted mousehelp for another). That and his shrunken Search block… πŸ™‚
