• Hello,

since I have updated to wordpress 5.6, I have an issue with the media library:
I simply can’t delete images anymore.

When I click on “delete image”, it behaves like it’s deleted.
But when I refresh the media library, the images are back.
The images are also still on the FTP.

When checking with chrome console, when I press delete, it gives me an error 500 on some jquery related things, see picture:

Any idea of where it comes from?

Is anyone having a similar issue?

  • I would guess this issue is due to the jQuery update in these latest updates to WordPress core. Take a look at installing the jQuery Migrate plugin. But I am not sure about the source of the ajax call. Possibly someone else will have more information on fixing that issue.

    jQuery update #jQuery update
Updates to jQuery in WordPress take place across three releases 5.5, 5.6, and 5.7. As we reach the mid-point of this process, run the update test plugin to check your sites for errors ahead of time.

If you find issues with the way your site looks ( e.g. a slider doesn’t work, a button is stuck — that sort of thing), install the jQuery Migrate plugin.

    Hello,

    Thanks for your suggestion!

I think it’s linked to the jQuery update too, it broke my theme and a few plugins which I fixed manually.

I have checked with the tool, and 2 plugins + 10 wp-admin files were showing as deprecated.

So I disabled the plugins (only the wordpress related deprecated files show, see screenshot: https://pasteboard.co/JL9jfzL.jpg , but still no luck, impossible to delete anything from the medial library.

I have absolutely no idea what’s the issue here, I believe if it was linked to these wordpress files, someone else would have had the problem x)

I have tried to reinstall wordpress already in case something went wrong during the update, but no luck.

What happens if you delete the wp-admin directory, download a fresh zip of WordPress (link) and upload a fresh copy of the directory?

It’s what I did when I said “I have tried to reinstall wordpress already in case something went wrong during the update, but no luck.”

Excuse me if that was not really clear.

    Unfortunately, it didn’t work :/

Ah. I thought I would check as sometimes folks just use the install button in the WordPress dashboard. What PHP version is the server running?

7.4 at the moment (haven’t modified it since last update)

I have a few websites using the same theme/plugins etc.. combinations with slight differences, and the delete function of the media library is broken for each of them.

Have you tried disabling all plugins and activating the Twenty Twenty theme?

Also, what happens if you set the jQuery Migrate plugin to jQuery Version: Legacy

    Thanks!

I activated twenty twenty theme and tested all plugins as you suggested: the issue was coming from an old plugin called “Send email only on Reply to My Comment”.

I have just found out it hadn’t been updated since 6 years!

So I have removed it and problem solved.

    Thanks again!

Happy to hear you have found the cause of the problem 🙂
